ROBBIE'S MINI FISHING REPORT

End of December 2009

The only news of real consequence at the moment is that the entrance has finally closed up altogether. The Bega Valley Shire Council is having meetings about it, but we haven't heard any results such as if and/or when it might be reopened. Hopefully, after the last successful opening, red tape will be less of an issue and reopening will be allowed.

As with the previous "closed" period, the lake fishing appears unaffected, with the side benefit being that a mob of big salmon and tailor are trapped in the lake and providing some good solid fun on light gear. The flathead, being lake dwellers, are as hungry as always, and there are plenty of whiting and bream about too. For those fishing the lake now, though, we'd love to encourage everyone to practise a bit more catch and release to ensure that fish stocks aren't too seriously depleted during the closure.

Speaking of catch and release, I see the photo galleries are somewhat sparser than they were in previous years, which might, to a degree, mean more big fish are being put back these days. A case in point is Scott Wakefield's amazing 15lb/95cm flathead (below). She was weighed in the environet to ensure minimal stress and given a big kiss before she was put back to keep on doing whatever it is that flathead do best.

Well, all that's left is for me to wish you all a brilliant festive season and all the very best for 2010. Hope to see you up/down/over here soon!
