ROBBIE'S MINI FISHING REPORT

February 2011

Things are actually really good in fishing terms - though you wouldn't know it from the absence of photos in a new 2011 gallery ... at this stage I only have about two photos, so haven't bothered putting anything up. I'm working on the principle that nothing is better than a pathetic something. So if anyone out there has some photos for me, please email them!!

The flattie fishing in the lake has continued to be outstanding, with many regulars commenting that they've never seen it so good at Wonboyn. It is the norm at the moment for the more experienced fishos to bag out on very decent "average-sized" fish without too much effort at all - say to 50cm. I'd say that's partly why I don't have any photos - people are releasing anything they catch that's above average (YAY) and filleting their catches before coming back up to the park without bothering with photos. At any rate it's been a while since anyone told us about anything 75+. You will just have to take my word for it about the quantities. Tactically speaking, poddy mullet seem to be the go right now, consistently outfishing plastics - been a while since that was the case. This might have a lot to do with the anglers on the other end of the rods, but the official word is that "poddies are the go".

The bream have taken ages to come in this summer, but are now reasonably plentiful on the flats, and though mostly not extra-long, they are generally very thickset and hitting hard - none of that finicky stuff bream can do so well. Wayne is always our yardstick for bream and he's been getting plenty, mostly late afternoon/evening. Whiting are still pretty scarce and those being caught are quite small. Not sure why: we can only attribute it to the consistently overcast and strange weather - whiting do like their sunshine! There are heaps of luderick about, doing what luderick do best - ie taking a bait only when and if they feel inclined, which isn't predictable or often. Several punters have reported getting the odd big trevally on plastics up the estuary.

I have still had absolutely NO luck fishing at the jetty, and can't understand it - I've been down many times late at night, when conditions are seemingly perfect and caught nothing. My last foray yielded one very grumpy toadie in a 3 hour session. Nice. Anyway, I am abdicating my position as the Bream Queen. In fact, I am so cheesed off with my !@%$!@# results that I am seriously considering taking up crochet (or something) and giving up fishing altogether!!
