ABC of GENERAL
INFORMATION |
|
| ADVANCE BOOKINGS |
In accordance with standard industry practice, we do not accept advance single night cabin bookings, especially for weekend nights. If you want a single night's accommodation, please call no earlier than the day before to check availability. Minimum bookings apply as detailed on the Tariff Schedule page. |
| BARBECUES | The park has a few wood-burning barbecues in the camp area, and various gas barbecues in the cabin area. Please see "Firewood" below. |
| BOATS | Two 4.6m 6HP Stessl Edgetracker tinnies (HDL #327) are available for hire to park guests only. Boats hold 4 persons max, with a child being classed as a "person". Motors are 6HP meaning no operator's licence is required. Hours of hire are from sunrise to noon / noon to an hour before sunset for half days, or sunrise to an hour before sunset for full days. Hourly hire is not available. |
| BOAT MOORING | A limited number of boat moorings are available for hire on the park’s private jetty. The jetty is leased from Waterways. Moorings must be booked and paid for at the office. |
| BOOKS | We have a good selection of paperbacks and plenty of (fishing) magazines at the office for loan or exchange. If you're still reading something when you're ready to leave, we'll generally tell you you're welcome to take the book with you! |
|
BUSH WALKING |
There are any number of excellent walks/drives in our area, and we have put together a brief guide to some of the best. Please ask for a printed guide at the office. |
| FIREWOOD | We sell firewood on behalf of our local supplier, John Bennett. Pre-cut dry firewood is available from the office for $10 per generous barrow load. John will also deliver bigger orders and stack the wood at your site. Please call (02) 64 969 197 to forward order delivered wood. Current prices are: $45 per half tonne, $85 per tonne. Alternatively, you can bring your own wood or a chainsaw -- there's plenty of fallen timber lying around on the side of road etc. The cutting of trees or tree limbs is strictly forbidden inside the park and anywhere in the nature reserve. Guests collecting their own firewood must bring it into the park pre-cut. |
| FREEZER | A large freezer is available for our guests’ catches and bait, free of charge. This is located next to the office and is accessible 24 hours. All bait and fish should be properly bagged, and clearly tagged with your name. |
| GAMES | We do not have a games room. Some board and other games such as bocce/boule can be borrowed from the office, free of charge, but most guests bring along their own favourites. Please see also "Tennis" below. |
| INTERNET | There is now full wireless broadband available if you bring your own Telstra dongle. We do allow access to our wireless internet at the office for limited use such as checking emails, ebay, Facebook messages etc., but unfortunately our limited bandwidth cannot support general browsing, games etc. (When I figure out how to monitor and charge for more extended usage, I will make this available.) |
| LAND FISHING | There are a number of places where you can fish the lake, rocks and ocean without having a boat. Ask at the office for a sheet (and verbal info) detailing these. |
| PETS | Most pets are welcome in our park and cabins, by prior arrangement and excluding busy periods. Some breeds will not be accepted at any time, regardless of how cute/cuddly etc. their owners think they are. Please bear in mind when considering bringing a pet that our surrounding areas are National Parks or nature reserve, where no domestic animals whatsoever are allowed. Dogs are allowed on only ONE local beach, accessible only by boat. Also, paralysis ticks are endemic to the whole east coast. To avoid costly vet bills or, even worse, the death of a pet, please Frontline you pets before coming and check them every day for ticks. Ticks favour hidden places like ears, nostrils, inside the lips, under the tail and inside the anus. Early signs of tick paralysis include wobbly back legs -- if you see this symptom, try to find and remove the tick and take the animal to the vet IMMEDIATELY. |
| PHONES | Only Vodafone mobiles (as far as we know) get reception in the park itself. Some Telstra mobiles will get a signal up at the top of Adelaide Avenue. There is a pay phone at the General Store across the road and phone cars are also available. |
| POOL | Our saltwater pool is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. according to the displayed park rules. Pool rules are strictly enforced. Swimming lessons from a qualified local instructor are available -- please enquire. |
| POWER | All campsites are powered, with outlets as marked on the park map. Extension leads are available from the office if yours won't reach the nearest outlet. A $2/night surcharge may be applied at our discretion if a particular site is using excess power -- e.g. running spotlights, an air conditioner or heating around the clock! |
| SHOP | The Wonboyn General Store is directly across the road from the park. It sells fishing licences, bait, liquor, fuel, basic groceries and some very good take-away food - the best hot chips in Oz!! Please note that the store is under new ownership and service is friendly and reliable! Pam will also cook "proper" hot meals on request. (I am still waiting for a set menu!!) |
| SNAKES | A variety of venomous (and non-venomous) snakes are active everywhere on the coast during the summer months. These are generally not a problem and snakes will stay out of your way if they can. However, you should be aware of their presence when walking in the bush or around the rocks. If you are concerned about the possibility of snakebite, carry a crepe bandage with you and ensure you are aware of how to treat a bite. In the even of snake bite, the area around the bite should be firmly (but not tightly) wrapped, and the affected limb should be immobilized as far as possible. The victim must be kept as still, quiet and calm as possible, and taken immediately to medical help. |
| STINGRAYS | Stingrays are plentiful in the lake and ocean. If you catch one, make sure you avoid the whip-like tail, where the sting is located. Also be aware of where you are putting your feet when in the water. If you're unlucky enough to be spiked, the pain is (apparently) excruciating. However, applying water as hot as possible to the sting site will (apparently) bring immediate relief. Stingray venom contains proteins which lose their oomph when "cooked" by the hot water. Not very helpful advice if you are out in the middle of nowhere, but if you're paranoid about these things you can always carry a flask of hot water with you!. |
| TICKS | Paralysis and other ticks are endemic to the whole east coast. Ticks also attach themselves to humans and generally you will soon sense they are there; however, you should check yourself and your family daily. Advice is conflicting as to whether you should kill embedded ticks with sprays etc. before removing them. We generally put some Aerogard or Rid on them, and wait a few moments. Grasp the (hopefully deceased) tick firmly with tweezers, as close to the skin as possible, then pull firmly so that the head and mouth parts are removed intact. Most people are relatively unaffected by tick bites, other than localized itching and discomfort for a few days, but others can be quite adversely affected so it's best to try to prevent rather than cure. |
| TENNIS COURT | The excellent Wonboyn Community Rebound Ace tennis court is available for hire, so please bring your racquets and balls if you enjoy tennis. Court bookings can be made and paid for at the Wonboyn General Store. |
| TOURIST INFO | We have a wide selection of informative brochures and pamphlets and some maps at the office. Eden has an excellent tourist information centre. |
| TV/RADIO | We have four free-to-air satellite TV channels in all cabins/units and to the four sites on "D row" -- otherwise there's no TV reception in the camping area. Radio reception in Wonboyn is limited. (Listen to the sounds of nature!) |
| VCRs & VIDEOS | All cabins have a VCR in them, and we have a very good library of videos available free of charge. We also have a selection of DVDs for those with DVD players in their vans - please ask. Some guests choose to bring rental movies with them from home. |
| WASHING UP | We don't have a camp kitchen, but there are two sinks behind the "Ladies" at the amenities block for washing dishes and/or getting hot water. |
| WILD LIFE | The Wonboyn area boasts a wide variety of bird life and animals. Wild birds, particularly parrot varieties, come to the office "bird pit" twice daily for a feed. Guests are welcome to hand feed the birds and free seed can be obtained at the office - limited to one cup of seed each per feeding session. For their protection, National Parks have advised that native birds should NOT be fed anything other than seed, and other fauna should not be fed at all. Please respect this advice. |
